Please contact me for more information about classes and private instruction in theory and ear training.
Private instruction - Students of any age work on individual projects with my guidance. Activities include participation in composition concerts and competitions. Private lessons are encouraged for music students who enjoy creative activities and who have a specific interest in composing their own music.
Composition Clubs - Students ages 8 and older get real-life experience composing music that is then rehearsed and performed by other musicians of their generation. The Clubs are non-competitive and are a chance to develop skills in creative collaboration and musicianship in a fun, positive environment.
Any student who has studied a musical instrument for at least one year (including theory and ear training co-requisites) can join a Club. There are three levels:
Junior Clubs focus on fundamentals: constructing short pieces from motives, phrases, and themes.
Intermediate Clubs explore larger forms, composing for solo instruments, 1- and 2-part choirs, and string ensembles.
Senior Clubs create concert works for more challenging instruments and instrumental combinations, 3- and 4-part choirs, and large ensembles.
I teach Composition Clubs in Victoria BC and Composition Club Workshops at special events across Canada. Music students and teachers/directors from anywhere in the world can participate in Club activities - to find out how, contact me!
Students who have a strong interest in composition are encouraged to participate in both private lessons and Composition Clubs, since there are important opportunities and skills that are supported by each teaching approach.
