Composition Clubs

Christine teaches Composition Clubs in Victoria BC.

  • Students collaborate on group projects which are commissioned by music teachers/directors and premiered either locally or farther afield.

  • Classes also include workshops with instrumentalists, so that students can learn how to compose music for a variety of instruments.

  • Students are required to be studying music theory.

If you are interested in joining a Composition Club, please contact Christine.

Composition Club Workshops

Upon invitation, Christine gives Composition Club workshops across Canada (this year, workshops happened in Charlottetown PEI, Whitehorse YK; Courtney and Comox BC, and Sherwood Park AB).

  • Students learn about the composing process by contributing their musical ideas to group compositions

  • After the workshop, teachers/students receive the notated scores of the group compositions (which they can use as they wish) with an explanation of how the musical ideas were created and expanded by the students, and how Christine developed these ideas into complete musical works.

For more information about workshops, please contact Christine.

Commission a Work!

Music teachers/directors can commission a FREE piece of music from a Composition Club! With guidance from Christine, the students work together to complete the commission according to the specifications of the commissioner. Take a look at the Composition Club page to see videos of Composition Club pieces that have been premiered. For more information on how to commission a piece, please contact Christine.

Ask a Question!

Music students anywhere who have a question about composing or who want feedback on an in-progress composition can ask a Composition Club.

  • The intention is to facilitate communication between young composers, particularly for students who don’t currently have access to composition instruction.

  • The students who ask the questions benefit from getting free, friendly and helpful feedback from the Club (with guidance from Christine).

  • The Club students benefit from having to think through the questions and provide answers.
